Winter Landscape

Circa 1670
Oil on canvas, 65.8 x 96.7 cm (detail)

AUDIO GUIDE

Winter was a highly recurrent theme in paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. Life stands still during this harsh season. In this context, having a source of fuel was essential. Our painting shows two opposing features that contributed to the Netherlands’ economic development: a number of peat stores can be seen on the bend of the canal. A fuel that was transported by barge. In the background, there is a windmill standing still in winter, which is powered by wind energy.

Making use of clean energy

Coal, which has been so critical to economic and social development for many years, is being replaced by other non-polluting and renewable energies.

Renewable energies are endless sources of clean power that are becoming increasingly competitive. They differ from fossil fuels primarily because of their diversity, abundance and potential to be exploited anywhere in the world, but, above all, because they do not produce greenhouse gases – which cause climate change – or pollutants that are so damaging to our health.

The transition toward renewable energies reduces greenhouse gas emissions
