Natalia Goncharova

The Forest

1913
Oil on canvas, 130 x 97 cm (detail)

AUDIO GUIDE

Natalia Goncharova is one of a group of Russian artists that drew inspiration from local folk art, combining it with avant-garde experiences of abstract rayonism. The aesthetic result of The Forest echoes the Russian lubki – folk tales carved in wood that decorated the homes of Russian farming families. In doing so, the technical work of the piece and the evocation of a forest draws us into such an ecosystem: the lungs of the Earth currently threatened by deforestation.

Deforestation and climate change

The forests covering a third of the planet’s surface act as the lungs of the Earth, offsetting the excesses of humans. Their ability to absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen is threatened by deforestation: an enduring process that has been going on for the last three centuries. At present, deforestation is one of the greatest causes of climate change. Forests and jungles are disappearing at a vertiginous rate. Over the last 10 years, no less than 13 million hectares have been lost.
