Mark Tobey

Earth Rhythms

1961
Gouache on cardboard, 67 x 49 cm (detail)

AUDIO GUIDE

Mark Tobey was a pioneer of American abstract art and in the study of Oriental calligraphy. His “white writing” is an expression of several visual cultures. Tobey paints at the speed of writing, producing white lines that never join together and make up the balance of a composition forming a constellation. Tobey’s meditative analysis of nature goes beyond traditional western thought to delve down into the rhythms of life. Metaphorically, the universal nature of his work is the perfect excuse to talk about the urgency of the rhythms of the Earth and respecting the planet’s limits to ensure the sustainability of future generations.

Respecting Earth's limits

The Earth is in a worrying state and we need to respect its limits. Sustainable development has become the greatest challenge. Sustainable means respecting the Earth’s limits. Sustainable is meeting current demands without jeopardising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
